FIFTH GRADE

I lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. - Psalm 121:1

Mrs. Tamara Sorensen

My journey began with a successful 22-year career in the Navy, a period I cherish with the utmost honor and dedication. Inspired by my passion for learning and my desire to teach and make a positive impact on the future of America, I transitioned into teaching. Before teaching the 5th grade here at Saint Nicholas, I was a substitute teacher in the South Kitsap School District and Itinerate Elementary Physical Education Teacher.

My teaching philosophy centers around creating an engaging and dynamic learning environment that is deeply rooted in Christ. Drawing from my unique experience leading and teaching others in the Military and in my extracurricular activities, I bring a perspective that I believe will be both intriguing and beneficial to my classroom.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy playing softball, doing Bible Studies, spending time with my husband, and going on road trips. I believe in lifelong learning and strive to instill this value in my students.

CURRICULUM

Mathematics

In fifth grade, students focus on fractions, decimals with multi-digit operations, base-ten numbers. We utilize models and real-world problems to deepen students’ understanding of mathematical concepts. Students also practice geometry through conceptualizing 3-dimensional space, estimating volume of 3-dimensional prisms, and using 1x1x1 cubes.

Science

Students study physics, chemistry, and geology in fifth grade. They learn to identify the properties of matter, construct models of atoms and molecules, and understand and experiment with chemical reactions. Students study the solar system and constellations, learn about the roles of water on Earth, and analyze the impact humans have on Earth’s systems.

Social Studies

Students explore the life of early Native Americans along with the exploration and formation of our country. Students are asked to demonstrate their understanding through assessments, projects, presentations, and short essays. Students also study geography, and learn to practice mapping skills.

Reading

Fifth graders expand their imagination by reading a variety of materials individually and as a class, including novels, poems, plays, and articles. They learn how to better identify themes, analyze plots and character development, and literary devices (such as figurative language, imagery, and hyperbole).

Religion

The Seven Sacraments are studied in great depth. This includes age-appropriate study of Scripture, prayer, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Art, geography, history and poetry will be integrated throughout.
